Scarring After Surgery
As with any surgery, scarring is inevitable following plastic surgery. The extent of scarring varies from one patient to another and is influenced by several factors: the person’s general health, age, skin elasticity, and surgical technique. It is the job of a plastic surgeon to minimize the scarring as much as possible through skilled incision closure techniques and good scar management after surgery.
Scarring after a tummy tuck
While scars are a result with any incision, the length of a tummy tuck incision makes patients even more nervous about scarring. Dr. Herte’s meticulous attention to detail and extensive experience in tummy tuck surgery helps to minimize the aesthetic results of scarring.
These are other steps to manage and reduce the appearance of scarring following a tummy tuck:
- Consistent use of silicone sheets and gels during recovery. Dr. Herte encourages all of her surgical patients to apply BioCoreum Gel as directed.
- Injections into the scars, although not common in our practice, every four to six weeks have been shown to flatten raised scars and consequently reduce their appearance.
- IPL laser treatments are helpful in calming the redness associated with some scars.
