What You Need to Know If You’re Considering Restylane

The dermal filler Restylane has been around for over a decade. The FDA first approved Restylane in 2003 to reduce the appearance of mild to moderate creases around the mouth area and to enhance lip volume. More than a decade later, Restylane is still one of the most sought-after injectables because it delivers its promise of restoring more youthful-looking skin.

If you’ve been considering Restylane, here’s what you need to know before having the injection.

The Book on Hyaluronic Acid
Restylane is primarily made of hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring sugar in the body that attracts water and keeps your skin supple and youthful looking. Aging and other lifestyle issues reduce the amount of hyaluronic acid in the skin resulting in the appearance of wrinkles, lines, and creases. Restylane injections replenish the hyaluronic acid supply in the skin, diminishing the creases and folds that run from the nose to the corners of the mouth.

Like all acceptable dermal fillers, the results of Restylane are temporary, lasting for roughly six months. Also, because hyaluronic acid naturally occurs in the body, reactions to Restylane are very rare.

Preparing for your Injections

The Herte Center recommends stopping all aspirin and ibuprofen medications 2 weeks prior to your injections. We also recommend that you plan ahead and schedule your injections 3-4 weeks prior to any events or trips that you have on your agenda. This means giving us a call 3-6 weeks before your appointment needs to happen in order to fit you into Dr. Herte’s schedule.

The Restylane Procedure
A Restylane session takes approximately 30 – 45 minutes, depending on the area being treated. Local anesthesia may be used to numb the injection sites, but newer versions of Restylane are mixed with lidocaine for the same effect. Generally, there is some downtime involved including swelling or bruising which is usually minimal but can last up to a week. You can generally return to your normal routine immediately after your injections.
