In February 2013, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the use of Natrelle 410 Highly Cohesive Anatomically Shaped Silicone Gel-Filled Breast Implants, also known as “gummy bear breast implants,” in breast enhancement surgeries. The gummy bear moniker came from similarities in the consistency of gummy bears and the thick silicone gel filling of the implant. This unique characteristic makes the implants more natural-looking than earlier varieties.
Implant rippling and leakage, potential complications following breast implant placement, are less likely to happen with gummy bear breast implants. Their silicone shell is thicker than that found in traditional silicone implants. Although it is still very soft, the thicker shell allows the implant to retain its shape.
Gummy bear implants can also retain breast shape and size for long periods of time. Outcomes are also more natural-looking as the implant is designed to provide more volume to the lower part of the breast, imitating the look and feel of natural breasts.
A longer incision (roughly four to five centimeters) is required. The reason for this is because the gummy bear implants cannot be squeezed and placed into the breasts.
There is also the risk of the implant rotating after insertion due to its firm texture, however, Dr. Herte has mastered the skill of sizing the breast pocket to the implant.
Lastly, gummy bear implants are more expensive than other silicone types because they are more costly to manufacture. The Herte Center for Cosmetic Surgery does not charge extra fees for gummy implants.
